The Odyssey is an epic travelogue, that recounts the adventures that Odysseus, hero of the Greeks in the Trojan War, experienced on his return home to Ithaca. Cunning, wily Odysseus is a treat to have as a protagonist--a true master of persuasion, social etiquette, temperance, and justice. One of the major themes of the work is the idea of hospitality. Odysseus experiences different degrees of proper or "right" hospitality, and different degrees of improper or "wrong" hospitality during his 10-year journey home. The book culminates with Odysseus casting out the impious suitors, who assuming Odysseus has died in the Trojan War try unsuccessfully to court his unwavering and devoted, albeit rather passive, wife, Penelope.
